From the top of Mt. Kazagashira, you can enjoy the harbor view as Ryoma Sakamoto used to do that. Ryoma was a famous samurai who set up the first trading company in Japan here. He was a key person of Meiji restoration and was assasinated just before the new government was established. We will walk down to Teramachi or Temple row, where a lot of Buddhist temples in many sects are standing. They are full of interesting episodes of history and folklore. Along the Nakashima river, many stone bridges were constructed connecting the temples built in the merchants' district at the foot of Mt. kazagashira. One of them is the oldest stone bridge in Japan, Spectacle Bridge built in 1634. Nakagori shopping street between them is the oldest shopping area in Nagasaki city. Old shops and houses can be seen here , such as a century-old confectionary shop, some authentic Nagasaki merchant's house and so on.
