Focusing on the modernist period (1856 - 1920s) up to contemporary times, we take a look at some of the issues, sites and legacy of Catalan nationalism and its important slot within secession theory. Modernism (as epitomized by people like Gaudi) was more than just beautiful and awe-inspiring architecture; it espoused specific political connotations that certainly played a huge part in the outbreak of Civil War, Franco's subsequent and harrowing 36-year country-wide dictatorship and ultimately the establishment of the Spanish Third Republic post-Franco. How far has this city come in a mere 40 years post-fascist rule, and how far can it go as a modern iconic and teeming metropolis?
