Private sightseeing tour with an American driver-guide (Expatriate - in France since 1992)
"Caveman art" is a really poor description, because it brings to mind images of grunting, hairy, club-wielding Neanderthals. . .
What is truly phenomenal about visiting these neolithic period caverns is that it is veritable ART.
These paintings, etchings and carvings were amazingly detailed - and realistic.
The techniques used on these walls deep inside the caves and accessible through tiny, claustrophobia - inducing passages are not childish.
There is shading, 3-dimensional realism, and other very advanced techniques - some of which disappeared for centuries only to be "invented" later in history.
Picasso was inspired to paint cubism after visiting these caves!
This is art - pure and true.
The images are not violent, and the scenes depict everyday life, not war, or anything resembling history lessons.
