My wife and I were very fortunate to get the name of Ivan Guerra, and even more fortunate to catch him between tours. Originally we planned to retain him for one day of birding around Putre, but he offered us such good suggestions about what to do our other days, that we decided to hire him for a three day trip: Arica to Putre, Putre to Lk. Chungara, and Putre back to Arica. Ivan met us at the airport, helped us select a high clearance vehicle, and then offered to drive. While in theory one could do the Arica-Putre-Lake Changara tour on our own, we would have missed a lot of birds and interesting side trips. Ivan took us on a very birdy alternate route, through the Aztapa Valley, by passing the main road closure. We would have sat in line for six hours without him if we had taken the main road on our own. The Aztap Valley produced several life birds, and included a visit to a private hummingbird feeder. Ivan knew where to find several of our target species such as the Peruvian Thic

kknee. He took us to places we would never have known about, both below, around, and above Putre and in Lauca National Park. He took us on a side trip through an amazing Andean Flicker colony. We got good looks at Flamingos. Of course there were Vicuñas, (19 herds in all), but we were thrilled to see the Diademed Plover, the Puna Rhea, and the Andean Deer. In addition to knowing where to find specialty birds, he identified them. His extremely sharp vision, located quite a few birds, mammals, and lizards we would likely have missed. He was a wealth of information about Chile’s history, culture, and particularly ethnobotany. The final coup was the Marine Otter that he spotted in the surf south of Arica. He is fluent in English, gracious in helping in a variety of ways, careful as a driver. And, above and beyond the call of duty, after the tour he came to our aid our last night in sorting out a fender-bender. There is lots more to do in northern Chile, and we would certainly hop

e that Ivan could be our guide on future trips.
