If you are interested in mummers, Karlovo region is your destination, as it takes a great pride in its Kuker tradition and around a dozen wonderful Kuker groups. The Feast culminates around Sirni Zagovezni, i.e. Shrove Sunday/ Cheese Fasting, the fortieth Sunday before Easter, when Kukers (mummers) go out, each in its settlement. The regional Kuker feast takes place on the central square of Karlovo on Saturday before it, involving all Kuker groups of the region and a few guest ones. However, the sites and people related to Kukers can be visited in every season, among them the ethnographic department of the Karlovo museum of history, and the community cultural centres (“chitalishte”) in Kuker settlements such as Kliment,Dabene, Domlyan, Kalofer, Sushitsa suburb of Karlovo.
