The construction of the Santa Teresa in the 18th century convent marked the beginning of the development of this neighborhood. Many visitors compare the neighborhood to the bohemian district of Montmartre in Paris. Its natural scenery, the pleasant atmosphere and easy access to Downtown Rio make this an attractive neighborhood. It is currently a popular tourist site as the area has its fair share of restaurants with live music during the weekends, cultural centers and unique handcraft shops , where you will explore with your private guide during a quiet walking tour into the narrow streets of Santa Teresa.

During the walking you will enjoy the views of the city center and the bay, specially from the Parque das Ruinas (Ruins Park) where was originally a mansion occupied by Laurinda a single woman who played an important role in the social history of Rio, however, since the mansion was in such a state of ruin only a part of it was restored and was used for concerts and open air shows with gorgeous view over Rio de Janeiro Downtown and Guanabara Bay.

After your tour continues to walk down Santa Teresa to the Escadaria Selaron (Selaron Stairs) is the beautiful staircase an explosion of color: 215 steps covered in ceramic mosaics from Convento de Santa Teresa (Santa Teresa Convent), where each step is unique and is made from ceramic, mirrors and tiles from all over the world. It is an ongoing project of Chilean artist Selaron, so do make it a point to marvel at his wonderful creations.
