If you have already been to Valencia city and are looking for something off the beaten path for one morning, then come with me to Sagunto, about 25 minutes north of Valencia. This is the shortened version of my Northern Valencia Itinerary that I started doing as per demand. Sagunto is the site of the instigation of the 2nd Punic war and has the largest Roman fort left on the Iberian peninsula- an undiscovered gem by most!

Aside from the impressive hill-top of Roman ruins and spectacular views of the Valencia region below, we will also visit a wonderfully excavated Roman street with its houses, water systems and shop remains, as well as a rich Roman merchant's home. As we stroll the quaint medieval streets of a once large Roman city in a bygone past, we will spot the old gate to the Jewish quarter, noble palaces, the Santa Maria church from 1334, started where the Moorish mosque once was, as well as a medieval mansion that now houses the remains of the Roman Temple of Diana and a Jewish bath or 'Mikveh'.

IMPORTANT NOTE: MONDAYS fort and Via Portico Museum are closed and itinerary can be supplemented with a visit to nearby caves, a portion of Valencia or another seasonal suggestion.

4-5 hours: After I pick you up, we travel 25 minutes north to Sagunto, passing orange groves and other farming lands on the way. We first vist the 'Via Portico' museum, only recently opened, where we see a fabulously excavated Roman road and side street with its great examples of the Roman way of life, its water systems, homes and shops as well as the nearby ruins of one rich Roman merchant's home.

We then drive briefly to the medieval quarter, passing the Roman circus remains amidst modern housing, and park. We then walk UP 10-15 min, to the spectacular Roman fort with remains of a forum as well as later Moorish Mudejar remains and Latin tombstones in the archeological museum. On the way down medieval 'Castle street', we stroll through the Jewish quarter and step into a 15th century mansion with mikveh and Diana Temple remains.
