This tour starts in front of Palazzo Vecchio, the massive building dominating Piazza della Signoria, that represents all the history of Florence from the rising of the Comune (the ancient city hall) to the domination of the Medici family, started during the 15th century.

This wonderful setting actually houses two museums. First, the "open air museum" on the square, where many beautiful statues are displayed to remind you about the glorious past of the city-state.

The second is inside the palace, where the bare rooms designed for the officers of the Florentine Republic were later turned into the lavish Grand Duke's Apartments.

Moving from the Cinquecento Hall (the ancient Audience room), we will visit the Element's Quarters and the Eleonora di Toledo's Quarters, once inhabited by Cosimo de' Medici and his Spanish wife. The outstanding frescoes were mostly created by the court painter Giorgio Vasari, Michelangelo's most famous follower.

Passing by Piazza del Duomo, the main religious centre of the city, with the impressive Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Baptistery and the Giotto's bell-tower, we continue up to Palazzo Medici Riccardi, the first monumental residence of the Medici built in the 15th century for Cosimo the Elder, member of a former branch of the family and became a sample of beauty and elegance for the next generations.

Our final destination is the Chapel of Princes, part of a monumental complex developed down almost two centuries in close connection with San Lorenzo that was chosen by the Medici as their parish church. The Chapel is the mausoleum of the family and was conceived to celebrate their noble dinasty; the main room was supposed to receive the tombs of the Grand Dukes and offers a spectacular decoration inlaid with semi-precious stones and marbles. It is connected by a passage to the New Sacristy, entirely designed by Michelangelo.
