Patan is one of three royal cities in the Kathmandu Valley. The other two are Kathmandu and Bhaktapur. Patan started around 300 BC. Its best time was during the Malla dynasty. This is when the grand palaces and temples of the Durbar Square were built.

What makes a Patan City trip special is its many temples, monasteries, and old buildings. It is a city where art is not just in museums. It is part of daily life. The narrow brick streets, carved wooden windows, and sounds from workshops make the city feel old and full of life.

Detailed 1-Day Patan City Tour Plan

Morning (9:00 AM - 12:00 PM): Patan Durbar Square

Start your day at the great Patan Durbar Square. This is the main cultural and old part of the city. When you step into the square, you see many buildings from the Malla time.

Krishna Mandir: This temple is a building wonder. It is made fully of stone. Its walls have detailed carvings that show stories from Hindu books, the Ramayana and Mahabharata. It is one of the most famous buildings in the square.

Patan Museum: This museum is in an old royal palace. It is one of the best museums in Asia. It has many old sacred art pieces from Nepal. The museum is in a nicely fixed-up building. The courtyards inside are also works of art.

Bhimsen Temple & Vishwanath Temple: Take time to look at these other important temples. Each one has its own look and meaning.

Mid-day (12:00 PM - 2:00 PM): The Golden Temple & Local Lunch

A short walk from the main square takes you to the Hiranya Varna Mahavihar. People know it as the Golden Temple.

The Golden Temple: This three-story temple shines with gold. Its bright front, detailed statues of gods, and calm courtyard offer a peaceful break. Remember to show respect, as this is a working monastery.

Real Newari Lunch: For lunch, try the local food. Find a place that serves a Newari platter called Samay Baji. This special meal has beaten rice (chiura), smoked buffalo meat (choila), spiced potatoes, soybeans, and other local foods. It is a big part of the cultural trip.

Afternoon (2:00 PM - 5:00 PM): Mahabouddha & Artist Workshops

Mahabouddha Temple: People call this the "Temple of a Thousand Buddhas." Every brick of this clay building has a picture of the Buddha. It is a special building that shows how skilled Patan's old artists were.

Artist Workshops: The true heart of Patan is in its workshops. As you walk the small streets, you will hear the sound of metalworkers making statues. You might see Thangka painters carefully adding details to their sacred scrolls. Many artists let people watch them work. Buying directly from them helps the local people.
