Velika Planina

Velika planina is the largest alpine pasture plateau in Slovenia. It offers exceptional views over the peaks of the Kamnik and Savinja Alps on one hand, and the Ljubljana basin on the other. Its uniqueness is one of the oldest and best preserved herdsmen settlements of its kind in Europe which managed to keep the individual pasturing. Velika planina is beautiful in every season because each one of them offers a different experience of the mountain landscape. In summer it offers numerous hiking possibilities and a journey back in time, to the pristine life of the herdsmen (the pasture season only lasts from the middle of June till the middle of September), while winter brings another set of opportunities for adventures, including snowshoeing, skiing and sledding. You can hike the mountain on well-marked hiking trails or you can choose the easier way and take a cable car and a chair lift (that operate all year long) to reach the top.
