Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira
The Salt Cathedral dates from the middle of the last century. In 1932 a small chapel was built where the miners prayed before starting their work day. In 1950 the old cathedral was built, but it was closed due to lack of security.
In 1991 the current Cathedral began to be built 60 meters below the old one, and it was inaugurated in 1995.
This cathedral is inside the Zipaquirá salt mines, very close to the city, underground. To get to it you go down from the entrance through a tunnel through different levels of the mine until you reach the main room.
On the tour you can see the huge tunnels of the mine that were created to extract the salt. The central nave of the Cathedral is in one of these tunnels.
To get an idea of the immensity of the place, it is enough to know that in some of these tunnels a passenger plane can fit. The sensation given by these large illuminated underground spaces is quite impressive.
The Salt Cathedral is consecrated to the Stations of the Cross. From the entrance to where the cathedral is located, you go through twelve stages in which you go through different spaces with works in salt and marble.
The central nave of the Cathedral is presided over by an immense cross that is the largest underground in the world.
The tour is done with a guide who will explain the history of the mine, the salt extraction methods, and everything related to the construction of the cathedral. It is a very pleasant visit that, together with the spectacular nature of the site, is well worth an excursion from Bogotá.
La Catedral de Sal data de mediados del siglo pasado. En 1932 se construyó una pequeña capilla donde los mineros rezaban antes de empezar su jornada de trabajo. En 1950 se construyó la antigua catedral que fue cerrada por falta de seguridad.
En 1991 se empezó a construir la actual Catedral 60 metros por debajo de la antigua, y fue inaugurada en 1995.
Esta catedral está en el interior de las minas de sal de Zipaquirá, muy cerquita de la ciudad, bajo tierra. Para llegar a ella vas descendiendo desde la entrada por un túnel a través de diferentes niveles de la mina hasta llegar a la sala principal.
En el recorrido puedes ir viendo los inmensos socavones de la mina que se crearon para extraer la sal. La nave central de la Catedral está en uno de estos socavones.
Para tener una idea de la inmensidad del lugar basta con saber que en algunos de estos socavones cabe un avión de pasajeros. La sensación que dan estos espacios tan grandes bajo tierra iluminados es bastante impactante.
La Catedral de Sal está consagrada al Viacrucis. Desde la entrada hasta donde está situada la catedral se va pasando por doce etapas en las que vas pasando por diferentes espacios con obras en sal y mármol.
La nave central de la Catedral está presidida por una inmensa cruz que es la más grande bajo tierra del mundo.
El recorrido se hace con un guía que te va explicando la historia de la mina, los métodos de extracción de la sal, y todo lo relacionado con la construcción de la catedral. Es una visita muy amena que unido a la espectacularidad del sitio bien vale la pena una excursión desde Bogotá.
