HELLENISTIC PERIOD-ESTABLISHMENT OF THESSALONIKI -
The ambitious king of the Macedonians Cassander, after dominating the battle of the successors of Alexander the Great, founded the new city in 316/315 BC, uniting 26 small settlements and named it Thessaloniki, in honor of his wife and sister Alexander the Great, . Its strategic geographical location at the northernmost point of the Thermaic Gulf and wider in the Aegean, quickly made it financially viable and made it the commercial center and naval base of the Kingdom of the Macedonians. Thessaloniki was organized according to the standards of the ancient Greek cities, in terms of the institutions of the citizens, in the ways of religious worship and in the organization of the economy, having a church of the Municipality and a Parliament. In addition, in 187 BC it minted its first coins with the inscription THESSALONIKI, having its own mint.

Seine strategische geografische Lage am nördlichsten Punkt des Thermaischen Golfs und weiter in der Ägäis machte es schnell finanziell rentabel und machte es zum Handelszentrum und Marinestützpunkt des Königreichs der MaKedonier.
