East Berlin
East Berlin, a city full of contradictions and contrasts. Berlin was divided from 1945 to 1989. And from the day the Wall was built in 1961, the western part of the city was enclosed by the Berlin Wall. East Berlin was the capital of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). I was born and raised here until I was 12 years old. Until the day the borders opened again. As a contemporary witness, I tell you about everyday life in the GDR, about my experiences as a child in this state. I explain why the Wall came down and how life changed as a result.
Ost-Berlin, eine Stadt voller Widersprüche und Kontraste. Von 1945 bis 1989 war Berlin geteilt. Und ab dem Tag des Mauerbaus 1961 der westliche Teil der Stadt von der Berliner Mauer umschlossen. Ost-Berlin war die Hauptstadt der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik (DDR). Hier bin ich geboren und aufgewachsen, bis ich 12 Jahre alt war. Bis zu dem Tag, an dem die Grenzen sich wieder öffneten. Als Zeitzeuge erzähle ich Ihnen vom Alltag in der DDR, von meinen Erfahrungen als Kind in diesem Staat. Ich erkläre, warum die Mauer „fiel“ und wie sich das Leben dadurch veränderte.
