The Golden Temple in Amritsar, India, is a revered spiritual site for Sikhs. It's a stunning complex with its glistening golden exterior, surrounded by a serene pool of water known as the Amrit Sarovar (Pool of Nectar). The temple, also known as Harmandir Sahib, is a place of worship and community where people from all walks of life come to seek solace, reflect, and participate in the free communal kitchen (langar) that serves meals to thousands daily, embodying the Sikh principles of equality and service.
Jallianwala Bagh, also in Amritsar, holds a starkly contrasting historical significance. It's a public garden infamous for the tragic massacre that occurred on April 13, 1919, during British colonial rule. British troops under General Dyer opened fire on a crowd of unarmed Indian civilians who had gathered to peacefully protest against oppressive laws. The massacre left hundreds dead and many more injured, becoming a pivotal event in India's struggle for independence. Today, Jallianwala Bagh stands as a memorial to the victims, with preserved bullet marks and a solemn atmosphere that serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during India's fight for freedom.
