Trip Overview
Nestled in the rain-shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, Upper Mustang is a mystical land of ancient kingdoms, Tibetan culture, and stark desert landscapes. Once a part of the Tibetan kingdom of Gungthang until around 1830, Mustang maintained its own monarchy until 1951. Today, it remains one of the most preserved regions in Nepal, both culturally and geographically.
The trek to Lo Manthang – the fabled walled city – offers an experience unlike any other. With eroded sandstone cliffs, windswept plateaus, and centuries-old monasteries, the region tells stories of myth and history alike. Due to its remote location and previously restricted access, Upper Mustang remains one of Nepal’s best-kept secrets.
