Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu & Kaag Tihar
You will land at the main airport in Kathmandu. A private car will take you to your homestay. You might stay in a place like Panauti or Kirtipur. These are classic towns. After you get settled, you will see the first day of Tihar. Your host family will tell you about Kaag Tihar. They will place food on their rooftop for the crows. It is a quiet, simple act. Later, you will have a classic Nepali dinner. The mood in the town will start to feel happy and bright.
Day 2: Kukur Tihar & Kathmandu Sightseeing
Today is a favorite for many travelers. You will help your host family show love to their dog. You can put a flower garland on its neck. You can give it a red mark on its head. You will also give it special treats. It is a sweet way to honor the animal. After the morning's fun, a guide will take you on a tour of Kathmandu. You will see the Pashupatinath Temple, a very important place. You will also visit the large Boudhanath Stupa. Finally, you will see Kathmandu Durbar Square, which is full of history. The city will be busy. Everyone will be getting ready for the next day's big events.
Day 3: Gai Tihar, Laxmi Puja & The Magic of Lights
In the morning, you can watch or join in Gai Puja. This is the worship of the cow. The cow is seen as a symbol of life. Later, you can help your family get ready for Laxmi Puja. The whole house gets cleaned. The family makes a colorful design at the front door. This is a rangoli. It is meant to welcome the goddess. As the sun sets, the town becomes a sea of lights. People light small oil lamps called diyas. They place them all over their homes. The whole town glows. You can join a group of "Bhailo" singers. They walk from house to house. They sing old songs. It is a truly special feeling to be a part of this.
Day 4: Govardhan Puja & Cultural Immersion
This day shows Nepal’s rich culture. You will see Govardhan Puja. You can also spend time learning more about Nepali life. You might take a cooking class with your host. You will learn how to make Sel Roti. This is a sweet, ring-shaped bread. It is famous during Tihar. You can also walk around the local village. You can talk to people and learn about their daily life. You can see how they work and live together.
Day 5: Bhai Tika Ceremony & Departure
On the final day, you will get to see the Bhai Tika ceremony. Your host family will explain the steps of the ritual. The sisters in the home will do the ceremony for their brothers. This act shows a deep bond. It is a perfect end to your Tihar trip. After the ceremony, you will share a last festive meal. Then, you will be taken to the airport. You will leave with great memories you will never forget.
