EXPLORE THE CITY OF MOMBASA-KENYA
Short description:
Discover the city of Mombasa. The beautiful tropical destination has several beautiful beaches popular for cultural enthusiasts, sunbathing, swimming, walking around the old town, or relaxing.
Long description:
Step into the rich history, vibrant culture, and scenic beauty of Mombasa, Kenya’s oldest and second-largest city. This full-day guided tour will take you through iconic landmarks, historical sites, and cultural experiences that make Mombasa a fascinating coastal destination.
Your adventure begins at your chosen meeting point—port, hotel, or railway terminal.
Thereafter, proceeds to Moi Avenue, home to the city’s famous elephant tusks. Erected in 1952 to commemorate the visit of Queen Elizabeth, these four giant aluminum tusks arch gracefully over the avenue, symbolizing Mombasa as the gateway to East Africa.
Continue to Fort Jesus, a 16th-century Portuguese fort and UNESCO World Heritage Site. With its imposing architecture and fascinating history, Fort Jesus offers a glimpse into Mombasa’s turbulent past as a strategic trade hub. After exploring the fort, take a leisurely walk through Mombasa’s Old Town. Its narrow, winding streets are lined with ancient Swahili, Arabic, and Portuguese architecture, bustling spice markets, and shops selling traditional handicrafts.
The tour also includes a visit to a Hindu temple, where you’ll learn about the influence of Indian culture and religion on the coastal city, and a stop at the Akamba wood carving workshop, where skilled artisans craft intricate sculptures—an important economic activity of the Kamba community.
Around 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM, enjoy a delicious Swahili or seafood lunch at Forodhani Restaurant, a popular spot offering fresh coastal cuisine and breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean.
In the afternoon, visit Haller Park, a peaceful nature sanctuary that is home to giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, antelopes, and a wide variety of bird species. It’s the perfect place for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts to relax and unwind.
Your Mombasa city adventure ends between 4:30 PM and 5:30 PM with a convenient drop-off at your hotel, port, or airport.
