Tsavo West National Park
A 2-day safari to Tsavo West National Park typically begins with an early morning pick-up from Mombasa or Nairobi, followed by a scenic drive along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway to the park, arriving by mid-morning. Upon arrival, travelers begin on their first game drive where they may see elephants, cape buffalo, leopards, maneless lions, giraffes, zebras, and other wildlife across diverse habitats including savannah and volcanic hills. A visit to the Shetani Lava Flow, a vast field of black volcanic rock formed by a relatively recent eruption, offers a striking geological spectacle. After a buffet lunch and rest at Ngulia Safari Lodge, the afternoon game drive includes an excursion to the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, home to endangered eastern black rhinos, allowing close observation of these rare animals. Dinner and overnight are spent at Ngulia Safari Lodge.
On the second day, an early morning game drive offers chances to see predators like lions and the abundant herbivores as they are most active during cooler hours. After breakfast, the highlight is a visit to the lush Mzima Springs, where crystal-clear waters fed by underground streams from the distant Chyulu Hills create a verdant oasis inhabited by hippos, crocodiles, fish, and a diverse range of birds. Visitors can often view underwater hippos through submerged viewing chambers. The safari concludes with a final game drive before heading back to Mombasa in the late afternoon. This itinerary combines excellent wildlife viewing with unique natural wonders and geological features, providing a rich and memorable wilderness experience within just two days.
