Annapurna Circuit route through Lamjung

For trekkers beginning the Annapurna Circuit, the early stages of the journey travel through the Lamjung district. The route generally follows the Marsyangdi River valley.

A typical itinerary starting from Besisahar in Lamjung includes these key stops:

Besisahar: This town, accessible via bus from Kathmandu & pokhara too, is the starting point for the trek. The elevation is around 760m.

Ngadi: From Besisahar, the path leads to villages like Ngadi and Bulbule.

Chamje: Following the Marsyangdi River, the trail continues past waterfalls and over suspension bridges to Chamje at 1,410m.

Chame: The route leaves the Lamjung district around the village of Chame, located at an elevation of 2,710m, which is the administrative headquarters of the neighboring Manang district.

Other ACAP routes and destinations

The ACAP encompasses a wide array of other popular treks, though they do not necessarily pass through the Lamjung district:

Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek: Leads to the base of Mt. Annapurna I.

Ghorepani-Poon Hill Trek: A shorter trek famous for its stunning sunrise views over the Himalayas.

Mardi Himal Trek: A quieter alternative offering close-up views of Machapuchare (Fishtail) Peak.

Khopra Ridge Trek: A newer route offering excellent panoramic mountain views.

Jomsom-Muktinath Route: A pilgrimage trail in the Kali Gandaki Valley.

Tilicho Lake Trek: Leads to one of the world's highest lakes.

Required trekking permits

To trek within the ACAP, you must have an ACAP permit. As of 2023, you must also hire a licensed guide or go through a registered trekking agency to enter the Annapurna region.

The permit fees for foreign nationals are:

ACAP Permit: NPR 3,000 (~$25 USD).

TIMS Card: In 2023, the government of Nepal replaced the TIMS card system with a new regulation requiring trekkers to use a licensed guide. Some older sources may still reference the TIMS card, but the guide requirement is the current standard.
