🏗️ History and Establishment:
Established: Around the 15th century (1400–1500 AD).
Founder: It is believed to have been established during the rule of the Sultans of Islampur or Sonargaon.
Purpose of Construction:
During the medieval period, Sonargaon was the ancient capital of Bengal.
Panam City developed as a residential area for wealthy merchants, landlords, and administrative officials of that era.
It was a major center for muslin cloth, gold and silver trade, and international commerce.
🕌 Historical Significance:
Panam City is regarded as one of the first planned cities of Bengal.
It was part of the main urban center of ancient Sonargaon, featuring a blend of Mughal and European architectural styles on both sides of a central street.
The city once had 52 old two- and three-storied buildings, which were the homes of rich Hindu merchants.
Commercial activities continued here until the late 19th century.
Eventually, due to changes in river routes, epidemics, and political transitions, the city was gradually abandoned.
