GUIDED TOUR OF GENEVA – THE CAROUGE DISTRICT

One of the most fascinating places in Geneva is undoubtedly the Carouge district. This area can be described as both historic and artistic, while at the same time it can be called ultra-modern, anarchic, and traditional. What will Carouge be like for you?

Faithful to its own traditions (which differ from those of Geneva), Carouge tells the story of a completely different city and a different people. The earliest references to this place date back to the period of Julius Caesar’s rule, although Carouge was officially founded as a town in the 18th century. It had no defensive walls and was always open to everyone, welcoming all with open arms regardless of religion, social status, or political views. In this way, Carouge became a serious rival to neighboring Geneva. Incredible as it may seem, this spirit has remained part of the local mentality to this very day.

After fully enjoying the beauty of this place, don’t rush to leave it behind! There is so much here to fill your leisure time: private galleries and exhibitions, small shops selling handmade goods (cosmetics, jewelry, clothing, and chocolate), antique shops, and of course restaurants serving local cuisine. It is in Carouge that I especially recommend trying raclette, cheese fondue, and tartiflette.

Tour duration: 1.5 - 2 hours.
