Day 5: See the Wild Honey Hunting

This is the main day of the trip. The day starts with a holy event. The hunters pray and give gifts to the forest and cliff spirits. This is to make sure the hunt is safe and goes well. After these rites, the hunt begins. You watch, amazed. The main hunter goes down the cliff. He is on a rope ladder made of bamboo. He has only his skill and bravery to keep him safe. He uses smoke from burning leaves and grass. He gently moves the big bees away from their hives. He cuts off pieces of honeycomb. These are then sent down to the ground in a basket. It is a raw, amazing show of an old human way.
