Discover the Lava of Mount Etna in Catania city center
Discover with me the impact of Mount Etna's eruptions on Catania with a fascinating environmental tour.
At the indicated time, we will meet in front of the 𝐜𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐚𝐧 𝐍𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨̀, in Piazza Dante. From there we will begin a tour in which the protagonist will be the Etna volcano. We will remember its eruptions and see the repercussions they had on the city of Catania by visiting some very interesting places in the city.
First, we will enter the courtyard 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐲. This historic place was one of the first to be damaged by the 1669 eruption, which left important traces still visible today, such as 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐛𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐥𝐚𝐯𝐚 𝐬𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡.
We will continue our visit descending towards the Roman Baths of the Rotonda and the Roman Theatre, while I will tell you the history of the 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐨 𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫. The bed of this watercourse is now largely underground, and I will explain you why!
From here we will head towards the Ursino Castle, 𝐚 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐯𝐚 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐨𝐟 𝟏𝟔𝟔𝟗.
There, we will discover how this impressive natural phenomenon has left its mark on the architecture of the city.
After having walked around the castle:
- If you take the tour in the morning, we will follow the course of the solidified flow and reach La putia dell'Ostello, where 𝐈 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚 𝐡𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐠𝐞𝐦 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐚𝐫;
- If you book the tour in the afternoon, 𝐈 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐳𝐢𝐭𝐚 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐥, linked to the 1669 eruption and to an interesting legend that I will reveal to you during the activity.
We will end this tour at the Fish Market, where I will show you the Sea Arches (in Italian: Archi della Marina) and explain you why they were erected in the center of the city of Catania!
