OVERVIEW OF THE TOUR & TANZANIAN

SOUTHERN CIRCUIT

Tanzania’s Southern Circuit provides a more remote and untamed safari experience compared to the busy Northern Circuit, appealing to adventurous travelers in search of genuine wilderness. This lesser-known region is celebrated for its expansive, pristine landscapes and incredible biodiversity, home to rare species like the sable antelope and African wild dogs. Offering unique ways to explore—such as walking safaris, riverboat journeys, and starlit fly-camping—it promises an immersive and truly off-the-grid adventure.

Day 1

Mikumi National Park

Your day begins at 8:00 AM with a pick-up from your hotel in Dar es Salaam by your private safari driver-guide, followed by a scenic six-hour drive to Mikumi National Park. Along the way, you'll pass through small towns, rural villages, and picturesque landscapes, with a stop for lunch at a roadside restaurant (included or at your own expense, depending on your package). By early afternoon (around 2:00–3:00 PM), you'll arrive at Camp Bastian—a cozy lodge featuring private cottages set in lush surroundings near Mikumi. After check-in and a short refresh, you’ll visit a nearby Maasai Boma for a rich cultural experience (included, $25 pp). You'll be warmly welcomed by the Maasai people, enjoy traditional singing, dancing, and storytelling, and gain insight into their semi-nomadic lifestyle, cattle traditions, and intricate beadwork—all against the backdrop of a stunning sunset. Return to camp in the evening to freshen up and savor a homemade dinner, before settling in for the night in your private en-suite cottage.

Day 2

Mikumi National Park

Begin your day with breakfast at Camp Bastian at 7:00 AM, then depart at 8:00 AM for a full-day game drive in Mikumi National Park, complete with a packed picnic lunch. Your safari adventure takes you through the Mkata floodplains, famous for their abundance of wildlife, including giraffes, elephants, zebras, wildebeests, buffaloes, and hippos. Keep your camera ready for possible sightings of predators such as lions, and with some luck, elusive species like leopards, wild dogs, and sable antelope. Highlights include visits to Chamgore (Hippo Pool) and the scenic Vuma Hills area. Enjoy your picnic lunch surrounded by nature and continue exploring lesser-visited corners of the park in the afternoon. Return to Camp Bastian around 5:30 PM to unwind with drinks by the fire or in the peaceful garden. End the day with a delicious dinner and overnight stay in your private cottage.

Day 3

Udzungwa Mountains

Start the day early with a light breakfast at 6:30 AM, followed by a 7:00 AM departure for Udzungwa Mountains National Park, a scenic 1.5-hour drive from Mikumi. From 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM, enjoy a guided hike through lush tropical rainforest to the stunning 170-meter-high Sanje Waterfalls. The hike, which takes approximately 2–3 hours each way, offers panoramic views over the Kilombero Valley and opportunities to spot endemic primates, vibrant butterflies, and rare bird species. At the top, relax with your picnic lunch and, if you like, take a refreshing dip in the waterfall pool. In the afternoon, descend and return to Camp Bastian for some downtime—enjoy a cup of tea or a swim in the lodge’s pool. Conclude the day with dinner and a final overnight stay at Camp Bastian.

Day 4

Mikumi National Park

Enjoy breakfast at 8:00 AM before checking out of Camp Bastian and beginning your return journey to Dar es Salaam. Along the way, stop for lunch at a local restaurant. You’ll arrive in Dar es Salaam in the afternoon, between 3:00 and 4:00 PM, with drop-off at your hotel, the airport, or ferry terminal as previously arranged.
