Designed for pre-med students and future healthcare professionals, this program offers firsthand insight into global health by observing doctors and nurses in a busy Kathmandu hospital. Learn clinical practices, patient care, and resource-based medicine while experiencing a new culture an invaluable step toward a future in healthcare.

Itinerary

Week 1: First Look at Nepali Healthcare

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

A person from the program will meet you at the airport. They will drive you to your home. This is a day to get settled in. Meet your host family and get used to the busy life of Nepal's main city.

Day 2: Training and Cultural Talk

Your day starts with a full talk about Nepal. This session covers key things. You will learn about Nepali culture, its customs, and safety rules. You will also learn your part at the hospital. You will get a simple Nepali language lesson. This will focus on common greetings and health words. In the afternoon, someone will take you to the hospital. You can see the place and meet the doctor who will be your guide.

Days 3-6: Hospital Work Begins

Your shadowing program is now in full swing. You will work about 4-5 hours a day.

Morning (9 AM - 1 PM): You will be put in a certain part of the hospital. Your job is mainly to watch. You will follow doctors on their rounds. You can watch how they talk to patients and see many medical tasks. Stay ready, ask questions, and take notes.

Afternoon: This time is free for you. You can go see local markets. You can visit places like Swayambhunath, the Monkey Temple. Or, you can just relax and spend time with your host family.

Day 7: Visit a Local Health Post

Today, you may go with a health team to a smaller, local clinic. This is a change from the big hospital. It gives you a look at the health needs of people in the city or in small towns nearby.

Week 2: Deeper Help and Exploration

Days 8-9: Weekend Fun

The weekend is yours to see more of the country. Many students take a trip to the old city of Bhaktapur. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Or, you can go to Nagarkot to see a great view of the sunrise over the Himalayas. This is your time to relax and see more of Nepal's amazing beauty.

Days 10-13: More Work and Special Areas

Based on what you are interested in, you may move to other parts of the hospital. This could be surgery, birth care, or kids' care. You will get to watch surgeries. You can see babies being born. You can learn about the special health issues of children in Nepal. In the afternoons, you can get ready for a small talk. You may also help with office jobs at the hospital.

Day 14: Final Thoughts and Farewell

This is your last day at the hospital. It is a time to thank the doctors and staff who helped you. Many programs have a farewell dinner with your host family and program staff. This lets you share your experiences and say goodbye.
