Sefar Trekking Expedition – Tassili n’Ajjer
Tour Type:
Trekking • Camping • Cultural Discovery • Desert Adventure
Day 1 – Taféloulet to Tamrit
We begin with a short transfer to the base of the Tassili before ascending the Akba pass to reach the plateau. From above, we see the endless dunes of the Erg Admer and isolated stone formations rising like islands from the sands. In the afternoon, we explore the wonders of Tamrit: the Valley of the Cypresses, the Grand Canyon, and ancient rock paintings hidden in nearby shelters.
Day 2 – Tamrit to Sefar
We leave the dramatic cirques of Tamrit behind and cross a plateau shaped by ancient riverbeds. Our route takes us through Intinen and Tetaghest n’Elies before arriving at the legendary rock art site of Sefar. There, prehistoric “villages” appear in the stone—narrow paths leading to “galleries” of engraved and painted scenes depicting daily life, ceremonies, and animals with incredible delicacy.
Day 3 & 4 – Sefar to Jabbaren
Our journey continues toward Tin Tazarfit and Tin Kani, weaving through plateaus and dry valleys. Along the way, we encounter a vast collection of prehistoric artwork, sheltered in shallow rock overhangs. The paintings are remarkably well-preserved and varied in style—testimony to six thousand years of cultural expression etched in stone.
Day 5 & 6 – Jabbaren to Erg Admer
Two days are devoted to exploring the walls of this extraordinary site. The “Martians,” herds of cattle, “dancers,” and archer battle scenes reveal a prehistoric life remarkably rich in change and diverse events. Wandering through sandstone corridors bathed in light sparks the imagination with astonishing visions. On Day 6, we descend toward the valley of the Erg Admer to meet our vehicles and head to the magnificent dunes of the Erg Admer. Bivouac under the stars.
Day 7 – Erg Admer to Djanet
The morning is spent exploring the Erg Admer’s sweeping sandscapes, walking between ridges of dunes that rise and fall like waves. Later, we visit Tegharghart to see “The Crying Cow,” a powerful and iconic Saharan rock engraving. In the afternoon, we return to the oasis of Djanet for a final stroll through the market and a quiet evening reflecting on the journey.
