Once the largest standing Buddha statues in the world (38m and 55m tall), carved into the cliffs in the 6th century. Though destroyed in 2001, the niches remain a symbol of Afghanistan's rich Buddhist past. Preservation efforts and 3D projections continue to draw global attention.
