Day trip To Mikumi By Sgr Train From Dar Es Salaam
Embarking on a day trip from Dar es Salaam to Mikumi National Park via the SGR (Standard Gauge Railway) is an excellent way to experience Tanzania’s wildlife in a single day.
Day 1: Day activities
Your journey begins early in the morning with a hotel pickup around 5:00 AM in Dar es Salaam. You’ll head to the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) station, where you’ll board the 6:00 AM electric train bound for Morogoro. The train offers a smooth and comfortable ride, covering scenic terrain in about 1 hour and 40 minutes.
Upon arrival in Morogoro around 7:40 AM, a private driver or tour guide will meet you and transfer you by car to Mikumi National Park, which is approximately an hour away. By around 9:00 AM, you’ll arrive at the park and begin a guided game drive.
Mikumi is part of the larger Selous ecosystem and is known for its rich variety of wildlife. During your half-day safari, you can expect to see elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, wildebeests, lions, and possibly even leopards. The park is also a paradise for bird watchers, with over 400 species recorded. Your game drive includes a bush lunch inside the park, typically under a shaded picnic spot or in a lodge area.
After an exciting day of wildlife viewing, you’ll begin your return journey to Morogoro around 4:00 PM. You’ll catch the 7:18 PM SGR train back to Dar es Salaam, arriving around 9:05 PM, where a driver will take you back to your hotel.
