ABSEILING

The day starts with a Pickup from your hotel at around 6:30 am for the drive to Dutoit's Kloof Pass about 75 minutes.

We enjoy a light buffet breakfast at 07h30 served at the top of the mountain covered with Proteas, South Africa's national flower; there is a tarred road on this private protea farm that gives us easy access to the start.

Everyone then makes and packs their sandwiches for lunch on the river. After a short briefing session, we change into wet gear as well as fitting helmets and harnesses. There is a short 10-minute walk of about 400m that we then take to get down to the waterfalls where we will spend the day. Be prepared to be wet all day long. Bring along your own aqua shoes.

Jumps of varying heights

There are 9 waterfalls ranging in height from 5 m to 50 meters, the larger 6 (15 – 50 meters) we abseil down, depending on water levels and group sizes, but you will be guaranteed a minimum of 4 waterfall abseils. The other waterfalls provide us with scrambles and safety lines to descend.

There is a point of no return after the third waterfall abseil and thus this trip is not for the faint hearted as the larger waterfalls, 50m/ 35m/ 30m come shortly thereafter.

The second waterfall provides us with a beautiful pool with voluntary jump options ranging from 2m/ 3m/ 6m/ 10m/ 12m/ 14m/ 15m/ 16m.

During summer the water temperature is around 18°celsius and there is lots of sunshine in the gorge when you can easily warm up.

This all takes place on private property and we are the only company allowed to access these waterfalls thus making it very exclusive.

The total distance covered in descending the gorge and then a short walk back to the transport is about 2km. The Gorge itself drops off about 350m and a drop off +- 900m, thus making it very steep.

The trip can be quite tiring both physically and mentally, even for those who are fit as the combination of adrenaline and constantly focusing on balance can take its toll. However, the reward for descending the entire gorge is fantastic as it just keeps on getting more beautiful as you make your way down.
