The Hill of Crosses - a sacred and mystical place.
It is believed that that the first crosses were put on the Hill of Crosses in the 19th century. Three times, during 1961, 1973 and 1975, the crosses were destroyed upon the order of soviet authorities. But the site has always revived just like Phoenix.
On 7 September 1993 the Hill of Crosses was visited by Pope John Paul II.
Today the number of crosses and crucifixes of various sizes and shapes is well over 100000...
After the visit to the Hill of Crosses we go to the nearby town of Šiauliai for lunch and try cepelinai (potato dumplings, stuffed with ground meat or curd) - the traditional and most popular dish of Lithuania.
