Tour of St. Basil Cathedral on Red Square

Language English
Cost 100 USD for tour/excursion
Capacity Group of up to 5 people
Duration 1 hour

St. Basil Cathedral on Red Square is one of the most significant Russian architectural monuments of the 16th century. The cathedral was built in 1555-1561 in commemoration of the conquest of the Kazan khanate. Today St. Basil's is mainly used as a museum; they very rarely hold services here. In fact, the cathedral consists of ten small churches, one of which is named after St. Basil.

The central church is consecrated in honor of the feast of the Intercession of the Virgin, as the capture of Kazan took place on that day. Four of the side churches were consecrated in honor of the Saints whose memory was celebrated on the days of other important battles of the Kazan campaign. The rest 4 churches are dedicated to a number of significant events in the spiritual life of Russia in the 16th century.

The cathedral features unique wall paintings, an impressive collection of old Russian icons and other masterpieces of applied art. Interiors of the 10 churches forming the inimitable ensemble of St. Basil's witness its 4 centuries' past.

During the tour you will learn about the history of the place and about the so-called "fools for Christ". You will see masterpieces of Russian icon painting and other rare objects of applied art. You will also have a chance to walk through intricate passages joining the churches of the cathedral.

The price above includes entrance tickets for 5 people and the guide's services. The price will be smaller if there are fewer people in the group.

This tour can only be booked as part of a longer tour. It is convenient to combine this tour with the tour of Red Square.
