Day 1 – Semera to Erta Ale Volcano (Camping at the Crater)

Depart early from Semera and drive across the arid Afar lowlands toward the volcanic region of Erta Ale. Pass through small Afar villages and dramatic desert landscapes.

In the late afternoon, arrive at the base camp and begin your evening trek (about 3 hours) to the rim of Erta Ale Volcano, famous for its continuously active lava lake.

Watch the glowing molten lava from a safe viewpoint — a truly mesmerizing sight. Enjoy a packed dinner and overnight camping near the crater, beneath a starlit desert sky.

Day 2 – Erta Ale to Hamed Ela via Lake Afdera (Camping)

Descend early from Erta Ale and drive through the volcanic plains toward Lake Afdera, a sparkling salt lake surrounded by black lava fields. Enjoy a short rest or swim in its warm, mineral-rich waters before continuing to Hamed Ela, the gateway to the salt flats.

Arrive by afternoon and set up camp. Later, explore the surrounding salt plains, where Afar locals still harvest salt blocks by hand and transport them by camel caravan — a timeless tradition.

Enjoy dinner under the vast open desert sky and relax at the campsite.

Day 3 – Dallol, Salt Flats & Return to Semera

After an early breakfast, drive to the surreal Dallol area, one of the lowest and hottest places on Earth. Explore the vibrant hydrothermal fields, with bubbling sulfur springs, salt chimneys, and bright yellow-green mineral pools — a photographer’s dream. Visit nearby salt mountains and the wide salt lake, where you can walk across crusted salt formations.

After exploration and lunch, begin the return drive to Semera, arriving by evening.
