Language English
Cost 100 USD for tour/excursion
Capacity Group of up to 5 people
Duration 2 hours

Novodevichy Convent is a unique cultural and historical monument of the 16th-17th centuries. Its architectural ensemble is one of the most beautiful among the Russian cloisters.

Nowadays it is a functioning convent and a UNESCO world heritage site. Part of the convent serves as the residence of Metropolitan Krutisy and Kolomna, who manages church affairs in the Moscow region.

Novodevichy Convent was founded in 1525 by Great Prince Vasily III in honor of the taking of the city of Smolensk from Lithuania. Russian tzars often came to the convent for worship and provided all kinds of material support to it. It was the place where ladies from the most distinguished noble families lived and took the veil. The history of the convent is closely intertwined with the lives of many representatives of the ruling house and especially with Princess Sofia, Peter the Great's half sister. She lived here for a long time and was buried in the Smolensk cathedral of the convent.

The cloister is situated in a very picturesque location. It stands on a pond and is surrounded by a beautiful park.

Adjacent to the convent is Novodevichy cemetery, an honorary necropolis where many renowned people are buried. Among them are Boris Yeltsin, Nikita Khrushchev, Raisa Gorbacheva, Nadezhda Alliluyeva, Anton Chekhov, Konstantin Stanislavsky, Pavel Tretyakov and others. Their tombstones were created by the best Russian architects and sculptors.

During the tour we will enjoy inimitable views of the convent. We'll see its territory, visit the cathedrals and learn about the rich history of this place. A visit to Novodevichy cemetery is also included in the tour.

The price above comprises the cost of the entrance tickets for 5 people and the guide's services. The price will be smaller if there are fewer people in the group.
