Lalibela ,Gondar and Addis Ababa

visit to the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela is the highlight of any visit to Ethiopia. The 12th century churches are the legacy of king Lalibela. It is said his visit to Jerusalem inspired him to build these truly amazing places of worship.

Day 1: Addis - Lalibela, by flight

We meet you early morning at your hotel for the transfer to the airport. A short flight takes us to the airport of Lalibela where our transfer is waiting for a 45 minutes drive to town. Here we check-in in our hotel and enjoy lunch. In the afternoon our local guide is waiting for us and we start with our exploration of Lalibela. Visit lalibela churches for the tour

Day 2: Lalibela

At our second day in Lalibela we need about half a day to visit the remaining churches in the village.

Itinerary of Gondar.

Gondar is founded around 1635 by Emperor Fasilidas and was the medieval capital of Ethiopia for over 200 year. The hilly surrounding made it easy to defend,· malaria was absent because of the high altitude and fresh water available from several rivers. It's founder and his successors left the town with marvelous castles en churches.

Nowadays Gondar is is a lively university town with a pleasant town centre which was build by the Italian's and still called Piazza. The town is famous for the asmari's (praise singers) playing their masinko's (one-string violin-like instrument). It makes a nice evening out to see them performing in one of the Asmari Bet's.

The small village of Wolleka, just north of Gondar, is a little remainder of the  Falasha (Ethiopian Jews) community who's origin is not known but it's believed their story is  connected to King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba

Royal Enclosure (Fasil Ghebbi)

Fasilidas Castle in the Royal EnclosureGraceful castles built in the 17th and 18th century by the successive Gonderine kings are found on the 70 hectare compound. In addition it contains many other structures among them a sauna (said to treat Iyasu the Great who was suffering skin disease) and a lion cage to symbolize the connection with the Lion of Judah. The Royal Enclosure or Fasil Ghebbi is a World Heritage Site.

Fasilidas Bath

Fasilidas Bath in Gondar for leisure or religious purposes by the royal family, nowadays it is the main site for the very colorful Timket celebrations in Gondar. It is a very  peaceful place to walk around. On the site is a monument what is believed to be the grave of Zobel the brave horse of Fasilidas.

The painted ceiling of Debre Birhan Selassie Church in GondarDuring the invasion of the Mahdist of Sudan in 1888 almost all the churches of Gondar have been destroyed. It is said this church survived by the protection of a swarm of bees. Well known for the elaborated decorated inside including the world famous ceiling with the angel faces. Every 7th day of the month (Ethiopian Calendar) Selassie day (day of Trinity) is celebrated

Day 3: Gondar -Addis Ababa by flight

After breakfast the transfer is ready to take us to the airport. Arrival in Addis Ababa depends on available flights, late morning or early afternoon. A transfer is waiting us to bring you back to your hotel.
