Luis Santos is a tour guide in Portugal

Places

Avoid getting overwhelmed with Stendhal syndrome the next time you’re in Lisbon by letting an expert lead you through the best parts and weave the stories together for you. Licensed tour guide Luis Santos does just that. He’s from Lisbon but was partly educated in England, and his warm personality, storytelling expertise and contagious passion will bring Lisbon’s history to life for you, whether you’re wandering its glorious piazzas (or praças) or the12th century Sé de Lisboa. Luis, who has only recently branched out as an independent guide, does not come with any kind of must-see plan, but says: “My tours are like a pizza, where the guests tell me what toppings to add. Of course, you need to know about the culture, the arts, the museums, but I also show my visitors the people, so they actually get to meet locals – shopkeepers, artisans, chefs, an artist, a fashion designer.” Say you are interested in wine and he’ll whisk you over to a genuine wine-tasting experience. Foodies always want to tour the trendy and famous restaurants, cafés and pastelarias (patisseries) but Luis also leads guests down backstreets to discover locals-only tascas stocked with pungent smoked sausages and cheeses where you can also sip the local ginginha liquer. Ask for his own favourite tour and he replies: “I love revealing old off the beaten track buildings with architectural details and ancient stories that a tourist would never discover on their own.”
