Bergamo: charm in two cities

The city of Bergamo in Italy seems to have been the scene of Disney's "Beauty and the beast", its cobbled streets, large trees, tiled roofs, and ancient buildings, make this place a paradise for those who live there and for tourists, too.

Close to Switzerland at the foot of the Alps, the capital of the Lombardy region, opens its doors to tourists so that they form part of their community and experience the pleasure of peace that reigns among their homes for a few days.

International access through its international airport Orio al Serio (which usually is marked as MILANO BGY), dozens of buses move visitors to the Centre of Bergamo, where begins an adventure that will be divided into two cities in one.

In this beautiful place once there are several lodging options, more than one hundred of hostels to suit all tastes and budgets, and restaurants with delicious dishes in the best Italian style.

When you are installed must decide whether to start your tour of the high or low part of the city, both beautiful. Alta is reached by a funicular railway, one of the oldest in Italy, built at the end of the 19th century, one will appreciate the senior side, but only the promenade in this peculiar mode of transport leaves amazed.

Once you arrive at the station in Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe, will be located on the mountain, and begin your visit to interesting palaces and ancient attractions that will surprise you.

It begins to walk through the Piazza Vecchia, or old town square, which is in the Center of the city, is a spacious place, with restaurants and beautiful buildings at the sides, where it is worthwhile to spend some time plunging into the routine of its inhabitants.

Once located a few meters is the civic tower which you can upload to appreciate incredible scenery. Also in the vicinity of the old town square are two buildings why should enter: the Palace of reason where you can see samples of art and the new palace that serves as home to hundreds of books and manuscripts which are fascinating stories.

Standing in front of the Colleoni Chapel, built between 1470 and 1475 is overwhelming, beautiful architecture and its immense structure protruding from the place, it is worth spending some hours admiring each architectural detail that deserves to be photographed.

No less striking is the Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore, which is magic for every visit and is definitely better to make with a local private tour guide who will explain the history better.  In the same way "The Duomo", the Cathedral of the city, is another place that has to know.

Leaving aside the part religious is the Donizetti Museum, dedicated to music and within "La Citadella", they are the archaeological civic, in which you can spend several hours getting to know about history and science museums.

To finish the tour in the high part of the city is "La Fortaleza or La Rocca", where there is another Museum and you can walk through the gardens and the castle of San Vigilio, where you will have the best view of all Bergamo

At the bottom, everything is already a bit more modern, we recommend walking along Via Roma, which appreciates interesting points in this part of the city such as the Donizetti Theatre, the Republic square, and the charming botanical garden.

Other rides you can do is to square Pontida, Dante and Delfino, in addition to entering the Pinacoteca of the Carrara Academy, where you'll see more than 1700 paintings by renowned artists.

Note before you plan your vacation to Bergamo climate in the summer months can get heat at 35 degrees Celsius, while in winter from November to February the thermometer can mark up to - 5 ° C. Consider the spring and fall for your visit.
